Your go-kart’s chain lets the crankshaft turn the rear axle smoothly, transferring that motion so the machine can move via front and rear sprocket. Those sprockets are connected by the go-kart chain, which is sometimes known as a roller chain. Getting the right size chain for this function is important.
When chains are too long, they will come off, which can cause issues, including getting stuck in the rear wheel or flying into other riders. Over time, go-kart chains tend to elongate, which means you may eventually have to deal with this problem. The more you use your go-kart, the faster the chain will loosen, though proper lubrication can extend its life. Conversely, if your replacement chain is too short, it puts a lot of pressure on the sprockets and generates needless wear on your machine.
A go-kart chain is critical. Correct sizing is key. Here’s how to pick the right chain size for your go-kart.
Understanding Go-Kart Chain Measurements
There are various aspects to measuring a go-kart chain. The first is the pitch. To determine the measurement of the pitch, look at the distance between the rivets. These are the studs holding chain segments together. Measure from the center of the first rivet to the center of the second rivet.
The pitch size will always be converted to an eighth of an inch. For instance, a pitch that is 1/2 inch will be converted to 4/8 inches for go-kart chain sizing. The next key measurement is the roller diameter. To get this measurement, write down the distance from one end of the roller to the other. The pin diameter is taken from the distance between one side of the pin and its opposite point.
The roller width refers to the overall width of the go kart chain. To get this measurement, be sure to measure between the chain’s outer plates versus measuring the inner plates. There is also a tensile rating for go-kart chains. This number indicates how much load the chain can handle, in pounds.
Knowing Which Go-Kart Chain is Correct
Some typical go-kart chain sizes include #35, #41, #420, #428, #40, and #50. If you are lucky, your go-kart chain will have its size stamped right on the links! Then all you have to do is replace it with a chain of the same size, making chain maintenance easy.
If the number is not stamped on, you will have to take the measurements of the pitch, roller diameter, roller width, and pin diameter as outlined above. Each chain size matches up with a certain set of dimensions. The chart below can help you determine the chain size based on those measurements.
Chain Size | Pitch | Roller Diameter | Roller Width | Pin Diameter |
35 | 3/8″ | 3/16″ | 3/16″ | 1/8″ |
40 | 4/8“ | 0.312″ | 5/16″ | 0.156″ |
41 | 4/8“ | 0.306″ | 1/4″ | 0.141″ |
410 | 4/8“ | 0.306″ | 1/8″ | 0.141″ |
415 | 4/8“ | 0.306″ | 3/16″ | 0.141″ |
415H | 4/8“ | 0.306″ | 3/16″ | 0.141″ |
420 | 4/8“ | 0.306″ | 1/4″ | 0.156″ |
425 | 4/8“ | 0.312″ | 5/16″ | 0.156″ |
428 | 4/8“ | 0.335″ | 5/16″ | 0.177″ |
428H | 4/8“ | 0.335″ | 5/16″ | 0.177″ |
520 | 5/8″ | 0.4″ | 1/4″ | 0.2″ |
520H | 5/8″ | 0.4″ | 1/4″ | 0.2″ |
520-2 | 5/8″ | 0.4″ | 1/4″ | 0.2″ |
525 | 5/8″ | 0.4″ | 5/16″ | 0.2″ |
530 | 5/8″ | 0.4″ | 3/8″ | 0.2″ |
How Much Flex is Needed in a Go-Kart Chain
The size of a chain also has to factor in its tightness. Again, too long or too short can cause problems! When installed, the chain should be tight, but not so tight that there is no slack. Aim for approximately 1/4″ to 3/8″ overall chain flex.
Other Go-Kart Chain Considerations
Wear and tear is inevitable, and making efforts to maintain the chain will help extend its life. Cleaning the chain is easy, with a non-abrasive and straightforward cleanser applied while rolling the rear axle and pressure washing from the inside out. You can dry the chain with compressed air and use rust prevention products. Lubricating the chain is important, too, as noted. It’s best to do this with the go-kart up on a stand. Apply chain lube between the inner and outer plates while spinning the rear wheels in reverse. Even the highest quality go-kart chains need some extra attention every once in a while.
Now that you know your chain’s size and why that matters, finding a proper fitting chain should now be a walk in the park. With this newfound knowledge of chains and its impact on the vehicle, you can ride confidently, knowing that the drive chain is optimized to bring forth the best performance and durability.
